Modeling Empathy

em·pa·thy
ˈempəTHē/
noun
  1. the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

According to some studies empathy is on the decline among young people. Recent "research, led by Sara H. Konrath of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and published online in August in Personality and Social Psychology Review, found that college students’ self-reported empathy has declined since 1980, with an especially steep drop in the past 10 years."

You have a three options for this post.
  1. Research what is contributing to this phenomena. READ THE SOURCE and summarize it for us. You must also include a link. -5 without a source. Tell us why empathy is important.
  2. Look at the video one of the two examples listed below and tell us about it in your own words. Did the example move you? Why? Why is empathy important to you?
  3. Describe an example from your own life where you or someone you know displayed empathy in a way that moved you. Why is empathy important in your own words?

  1. The story about the football player who sat with an 11 year old boy was very touching. It shows on how the people who are different from other kids have an effect on this one football player who sat with him during lunch when he was all alone. The football player stated that he didn't know about the little boys condition and he saw the little boy sitting alone and he helped him. His mom was also very touched that the kid sat with her son when he had no one to sit with. I feel like empathy is important to me because some people will shun other people out because they are different, but they don't how the other person feels inside because they want to hold their feelings inside of them. Just helping one kid out and making the kid smile for a day is all you really need to do to help that kid out that feels neglected or rejected. If it is even just sitting with them during lunch or making them smile while talking to them, you can help a depressed or maybe abused kid out.

  2. Reasons that could be contributing to this phenomena is social isolation. Social isolation could result to the lack of empathy. The summary of the article is that empathy has been declining since 1980.Raymond A. Mar of York University in Toronto has shown that adults that read less fiction show less empathy.Interpersonal Reactivity Index made a survey for students the results showed that 75% of students are less emphatic than students from 30 years ago.

  3. Empathy is very important for most people in this world. Empathy was displayed in my life mostly in the 7th and 8th grade. It was just that my friends understood what was happening and they helped me out a lot. Empathy is important because without it how else would we be able to share mutual feelings about the same subject. And how else would we be able to understand each other.

  4. Empathy is something we all have witnessed it our lives. In times where I've been down my friends, a specific friend to be exact was always there for me. It's important to me because no one should keep anything in. Being open with people is especially important so empathy holds a place in my heart.

  5. Empathy is displayed throughout life in many different life situations and lessons. One of the few times when empathy was shown in my life time was in 8th grade. In 8th grade we had to take finals at the end of the school year for every class we took that year. Most of my classmates didn't want to take the test, because how important, long, and crucial the test would be. This situation shows empathy because I too did not want to take finals, although I knew I had to. In the end we all helped each other study for finals, and took finals despite not wanting to take the test. I think that empathy is important because you are able to connect with others in a way that you wouldn't be able to without it.

  6. Empathy is about placing yourself in someone's shoes in order to see what they are dealing with and be able to better help them. Fortunately I've had the privilege of seeing empathy been displayed throughout my life, whether it was towards me or by those around me. One example was when I started a new school called Phyls Academy. I was extremely shy but luckily my best friend at the time also came along with me. luckily for her, she already had friends at the school so it was easy for her to adjust. I on the other hand kept to myself and counted the minutes till dismissal. She noticed how I kept to myself and remembered how one point in time she was in my shoes at our old school and I helped her make new friends. She knew how I felt and helped me adjust and make many new friends.
Empathy is something very important because it gives those looking in on the outside a better understanding of what someone is going through. If more people had empathy towards others then people who are suicidal and depressed will be better understood and thus easier to help.

  7. Based on the video about the Autistic middle school student, I can tell that empathy is an important topic to many. Although just sitting with the boy did not seem like a big deal, it was for the mother and even the boy because usually he sits alone. What makes this an example of empathy is that the FSU player didn't even know he was autistic he just knew that no one would want to sit alone.

  8. empathy is something thats seen throughout daily life. Empathy was shown to me during 5th grade and i mean its displayed around me so its everywhere. It involved family issues, hard situations and more.empathy is important because it makes us react different and show different feelings toward things. Without it we would just all have the same opinion and feelings toward soemthing
