Digital Literacy 101

There has been a lot of talk in the news lately about the abundance of fake news. Fake news is information deliberately posted to confuse people, drive traffic to websites and influence discussions or policy. We know from class that anyone can create a website. It is now our job to become detectives of what is real vs. what is fake.

Websites and news organizations make money from advertising when we view their content. There are three important distinctions for you to know:

  1. Native Advertising - advertising that tries to sell or promote a product disguised as a news story
  2. Traditional Advertising - most common advertising that sells or promotes a product
  3. News story - real content containing factual information about a subject and independent of bias and should answer, who, what, when and how
For this post take a look at the following website banner and answer this question:

Is this native advertising, traditional advertising or a news story and why?

  1. Based on the above advertisement, I believe that it is Traditional Advertising. Obviously it could not be a news story because you can easily see that there is no actual story with it even though it does mention writing. It also cannot be native Advertising because there is no story that they're using to hide the ad. It literally is just saying that they're looking for people who've "got a story" to join their workshop.

  3. I think that the advertising above is traditional advertising. This is because it is something that promotes a product or thing. But it can also be native because they don't even mention a story that they are trying to sell, they just want to know your story which is creepy.

  4. It believe this post above is a Traditional Aderversting becuase it pormotes a product. It is not a news story because it doesn't contain real content with factual information about a subject. It is also not a Native Advertising because it doesn't sell a product as a news story. This product is saying they want people to join if they "have a story." This advertisement has a code where you can save money for the product.

  5. I believe it is Traditional Advertising because it promotes a thing. It can also be Native Advertising because they are not specific on what they are trying to promote other than wanting to know your story or if you have one.

  6. I think that this advertisement would most likely be Traditional Advertising. I believe this is Traditional Advertising because if it was a news story it would have content containing factual information about a subject, or an independent of bias and answers questions like who, what, when or how. Furthermore I also don't think that it is native advertising because if it was native advertising it would have an advertisement that tries to sell or promote a product disguised as a news story.

  7. This is Traditional Advertising because it is trying to promote a product which is "Gotham Writers". The reason it isn't Native Advertising is because it is nothing news story related. It is not a New Story because it doesn't contain information about a subject or neither does it contain any factual information.

  9. I believe it is Traditional Advertising. I say this because it is promoting something. It would not be Native Advertising because it is not trying to sell or promote something disguised as something else. It also is not a news story because it does not contain "factual information about a subject and independent of bias and should answer, who, what, when and how."
