Digital Literacy Continued

This is a continuation of our previous post regarding information literacy. Websites and news organizations make money from advertising when we view their content. There are three important distinctions for you to know:
  1. Native Advertising - advertising that tries to sell or promote a product disguised as a news story
  2. Traditional Advertising - most common advertising that sells or promotes a product
  3. News story - real content containing factual information about a subject and independent of bias and should answer, who, what, when and how
For this post take a look at the following two website banners and answer this question:

Which are these an example of: native advertising, traditional advertising or a news story and why?

  1. The first banner is native advertising because it is trying to promote people to consider stopping the production of almonds in California. The second banner is a News Story by the title "The Real Reason Why Women Don't Go into Tech". The word real promotes that their is factual content that makes the article true.

  2. The first advertisement is a native advertising. This is because it seems like a news letter but really they are just trying to sell almonds. The second advertisement is a news story. This is because it isn't trying to sell anything its just giving you facts about why women don't go into tech.

  3. The banner talking about "The Real Reasons Women Don't Go Into Tech" seems like an actual news story. Based on the cover I can tell it has some sort of statistics that maybe prove the claim in the title. The second banner seems like an example of native advertising because it is just trying to promote the topic at hand: Almonds.

  9. The first banner would be considered as Native Advertising. I say this because it is trying to convince the people of California to stop the production of almonds there. It is really disguised as a news story. The second banner, "The Real Reasons Women Don't Go Into Tech", would be a news story because they are providing you with real information.
