How to give a killer presentation.

Giving presentations is hard. Many of us are extremely uncomfortable speaking in front of an audience. It takes practice and skill. Here are some helpful tips. Excerpts from: https://hbr.org/2013/06/how-to-give-a-killer-presentation

Frame your story
We all know that humans are wired to listen to stories, and metaphors abound for the narrative structures that work best to engage people. When I think about compelling presentations, I think about taking an audience on a journey. A successful talk is a little miracle—people see the world differently afterward.

Plan Your Delivery
There are three main ways to deliver a talk. You can read it directly off a script or a teleprompter. You can develop a set of bullet points that map out what you’re going to say in each section rather than scripting the whole thing word for word. Or you can memorize your talk, which entails rehearsing it to the point where you internalize every word—verbatim.

Develop Stage Presence
The biggest mistake we see in early rehearsals is that people move their bodies too much. They sway from side to side, or shift their weight from one leg to the other. People do this naturally when they’re nervous, but it’s distracting and makes the speaker seem weak. Simply getting a person to keep his or her lower body motionless can dramatically improve stage presence.

Plan the Multimedia
Keep it simple; don’t use a slide deck as a substitute for notes (by, say, listing the bullet points you’ll discuss—those are best put on note cards); and don’t repeat out loud words that are on the slide. Not only is reciting slides a variation of the teleprompter problem—“Oh, no, she’s reading to us, too!”—but information is interesting only once, and hearing and seeing the same words feels repetitive.

Watch the following video and write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) opinion about Richard's story. What about it moved you in particular.

  1. Richard's story is about how he has to keep the lions away from his cattle. He created an amazing invention, or a light system to keep the lions away from their livestock throughout the night. This system is great because it helps the community stay safe and lets them live peacefully with the lions. His presentation was very good he didn't seem nervous and he was very prepared for this presentation.

  2. Richard story is very interesting because he invented a light system so that lions don't eat the live stock in the night. He not only helped his family but also helped his community so that the lions don't eat the animals. I liked how he found a solution because he said in his community they kill the lions so that they stay away but Richard created this system without hurting the lions and now the animals are safe from the lions, so conflict is solved. This invention also made other animals stay away for example elephants. Richard presentation was very good and was prepared well.

  3. Richard's story is very cool. How he came up with different ideas but than settled on this moving light system. It was smart of him because it keeps the lions away from the stock and also limits the killing of lions. He came up with a system to trick lions into thinking he was walking around the shed, when really it was the light bulbs flashing.

  4. Richards story is really interesting because he's a really young boy who invented the light system so that lions don't eat the live stock during the night. He helped both his family and community by inventing this. He wasn't scared nor un prepared for his presentation. This invention also made other animals stay away from the elephants

  5. Richard's story about his invention was not only interesting but inspiring. I think what I liked most about it was how he found a way to save both the cows and the lions with only one light. He basically just killed two birds with one stone. What I also enjoyed was how he didn't keep the idea to himself. But he also shared it with multiple communities in Kenya. And relating to the tips for a killer presentation, I think he followed it really well. he told his story in a lively manner and provided pictures for the audience.

  6. Richards story was very insightful and inspiring. Richards story was inspiring due to the fact that he is only 9 years old and he has already invented a light system to scare away lions. This shows no matter your age or where you came from you can still make your mark on your community. Richards presentation was very engaging as he connected with the audience and employed the use of comedy in his presentation

  7. Richard's story was very helpful and inspiring. His trial runs with many different types of light can show how desperate he wanted to help both cows and lions. After him making the diversion for the lions, he soon grew closer to them. Both people of Kenya, lions, and bears could now live together in peace.

  8. Richard's story was very inspiring and helpful for people living in the same situations as him. He is doing what is right for his family and friends and for a young inventor, he can inspire people to do the same. For being just 9 and inventing a solar-powered solution designed to safely scare the lions away shows no matter your age, race or gender, you can put a mark on your community. He still used comedy in his presentation and is good that he connected with the audience so well to show what he made.

  10. Richard's story was excellent. He is so young and english not being his first language he was still very confident in his presentation. For him to make an amazing invention to keep lions away from the other animals is very inspiring and shows kids that your age doesnt get in the way of you doing something great.
